About Frinton on Sea

The small seaside town of Frinton on Sea in the Tendring district of Essex was once, purchased in its entirety and developed as a playground for the rich and famous.

Described by travel writer Karen Bellamy as “a jewel of a town” this “little piece of ol' England” is also noted for being the final target in England to come under fire in the last war. Thankfully for us, they missed and much of it exists now as it did then, with many of the buildings decorated in the same picturesque way.

Nestled nicely between Walton-on-Naze to the North and the village of Kirby-Le-Soken to the West, Frinton was at one time fairly isolated but the passage of time has seen those once distinct borders erode and communication links are now well established.

There is over a mile of delightful sandy beach at Frinton with facilities and beach wardens in season and an area of sea zoned for water sports such as, sailing, and windsurfing. The shore is lined by several hundred beach huts of varying colours and styles giving the area a real picture post card feel.

Legend has it, that to be a 'proper Frintonian' one must live within the sea-facing side of the railway gates, or 'inside the gates'. but since the people are warm and welcoming this does not lead to any more than friendly banter.

Until fairly recently, there were no public houses in the town, indeed now, there is only one. This however was not due to a local zeal for prohibition, more to the preservation of beauty, charm and the genteel character of the town.

Frinton contains a number of active churches and a small convent of nuns who founded the independent St. Philomena's day school for 4 - 11 year olds as well as Frinton County Primary School and Tendring Technology College.
