Moving Checklist - Get Organised For Your Move

Moving house is usually an exciting time, where you are looking forward to settling in to your new home. However it can also be stressful as there is a lot to organise, which can add to the pressure if not planned properly.

We have put together this step-by-step guide to help you get ready for your move date.  It is arranged in a natural order, starting with things to do six weeks in advance of your move.

Six Weeks Prior To Moving Day

  1. Through your solicitor and estate agent, get confirmation of your moving date.
  2. If you are currently renting where you live, notify your landlord of your departure date.
  3. Ensure your home insurance covers you from the day you move in.
  4. Get written quotes from three removal companies. Check their references, their insurance and whether they are members of a professional accreditation such as the British Association of Removers.
  5. If you are relying on friends to help you move, get in touch with them and confirm they will be available.
  6. Contact storage companies and arrange temporary storage if you require it. This can also often be arranged through your removal company
  7. Go through your house thoroughly and declutter. The more you can clear, the less you will have to move on the day and redistribute in your new home.
  8. Order any new furniture that you need for your new home, so that it can be delivered on your move in day.
  9. Send Change of Address cards or letters to friends and relatives as well as financial institutions and communications companies.
  10. Notify schools and medical centres, the DVLA, Tax and Post Offices

Two Weeks Prior To Moving Day

  1. Start to pack non-essentials. Box up books and out-of-season clothing.
  2. Make an inventory of all furniture items to be packed. This will help you with insurance purposes and finding things at the other end.
  3. If moving out of area, de-register from your doctor, dentist and optician.
  4. Arrange post forwarding to your new address. This can be set up at your local post office.
  5. Contact your chosen removals firm and confirm dates and times.
  6. Arrange the key handover time with your estate agent.

One Week Prior To Moving Day

  1. Inform the local council of your moving date.
  2. Find a safe, memorable place for all your important documentation. Make sure this is easily accessible throughout the move process.
  3. Finish the packing and keep only daily essentials handy
  4. Wash and dry all linens and clothing.
  5. Ensure all boxes are labelled appropriately.
  6. Check your inventory, add or delete items as appropriate.
  7. De-clutter again.
  8. Clean outdoor equipment; drain petrol from mowers and water from hoses.
  9. Defrost the fridge and freezer and give your old home a thorough clean.
  10. Contact all utility companies and TV licensing and notify them of your moving date.
  11. Cancel milk and papers from moving date.
  12. Check on any items due for delivery to your new home.
  13. Arrange Baby and/or Pet sitters for the day.

Follow this checklist for a stress free move to your new home.
